Creating Memorable Logo Designs: Tips and Best Practices

Here at Filmtwist Creative Agency, we pride ourselves on being able to create memorable logo designs for our clients. How do we come to these final logo designs? Well, it requires learning a lot about our clients – from the history behind their brand to the feelings they want to invoke in people that see their logo. While we can certainly help you create your own logo, you may be wondering how to do it yourself. Here are 5 helpful tips and best practices when it comes to creating a memorable logo design.

1. Understand Your Brand

Before beginning the design process, take a moment to assess who you are! What’s the story behind your brand? Where did you originate from? Where are you located? All of these factor into your brand identity. Understanding yourself will create a good foundation of what aspects you want your design to focus on. As an example, let’s say that your company is Stellar Coffee, a local coffee shop that started from two friends’ passion for coffee and quickly grew into a hotspot for open mic nights, art exhibitions and book clubs. Here, you would want to focus on how your company acts as a local space for creative communities in your area. You would want to express the inviting culture in your logo design. Focusing on aspects like these will help point you in the right direction when you start designing your logo.

2. Ensure Your Logo is Readable

Sometimes, simplicity is key. Your brand may have a lot of history, but trying to incorporate too many details into your design will actually clutter and cause your brand to feel weaker. Remember, your logo is going to be used in all sorts of ways – from signage to merchandising to marketing campaigns on Facebook! You want to make sure that it is immediately recognizable. Not everyone will stop and read into every detail in your design.

3. Stand Out From Your Competition

In every industry, there is always going to be some competition from other organizations/companies. Because of this, you want to make sure that your logo design is distinct from other companies. Get creative! Let’s use our fake company, Stellar Coffee, as an example again. If we’re designing a logo for this company, you may start thinking of imagery of coffee cups, coffee beans, espresso shots, etc. While this may seem in line with your brand, it comes across as too basic. A simple coffee cup isn’t going to grab someone’s attention, especially when there are 1000s of other coffee shops competing for the same customers. Use elements from your brand identity, like the inviting space or the location of the shop. Use imagery that is unique; it doesn’t have to directly relate to the industry you’re in! You don’t see Starbucks using coffee cups in their logo.

4. Color Palette

The colors you choose to represent your brand are extremely important. Specific colors can evoke emotions in your customers. For example, cooler colors, such as blue and green, can express calmness and stability. On the other hand, warmer colors, such as red and orange, can express energy, passion and even anger. Make sure to consider what feelings you want people to feel when they look at your logo design.

5. Get Feedback

No matter the size of the organization, you want to make sure you are getting multiple eyes on your logo design. Don’t be scared to receive feedback! Collaborating with other members of your team may spark new ideas that you may have never thought of in the first place. When you end up working on a logo design, you may become boxed into certain ideas. Make sure to be open to new ideas, as it will help you build an even more unique and memorable design. Even if a logo design is rejected by others, it doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world. It’s just another step in the right direction.

Remember these tips and practices, and you’re on your way to creating a memorable logo design that fits your brand identity perfectly! Creating a logo design isn’t going to happen overnight. While you may have a lot of ideas initially, it will take time and iteration to flesh out these ideas. Don’t be afraid to take new routes if the first design you create doesn’t feel right.
